Ammonia NH3, can be synthesized by the following reaction: 2NO + 5H2 → 2NH3 +2 H2O If you start with 90.0 grams of NO and an unlimited supply of H2, what is the theoretical yield of ammonia? How much water is produced? (show your work)

Answer #1

Number of moles of NO = 90.0 g / 30.01 g/mol = 3.00 mole

from the balanced equation we can say that

2 mole of NO produces 2 mole of NH3 so

3.00 mole of NO will produce

= 3.00 mole of NO *(2 mole of NH3 / 2 mole of NO)

= 3.00 mole of NH3 were produced

mass of 1 mole of NH3 = 17.031 g

so the mass of 3.00 mole of NH3 = 51.1 g

Therefore, the theretical yield of NH3 = 51.5 g

from the balanced equation we can say that

2 mole of NO produces 2 mole of H2O so

3.00 mole of NO will produce

= 3.00 mole of NO *(2 mole of H2O / 2 mole of NO)

= 3.00 mole of H2O

mass of 1 mole of H2O = 18.016 g

so the mass of 3.00 mole of H2O = 54.0 g

Therefore, the mass of water produced would be 54.0 g
