A 250 mL container of a gas is at 100 degrees Celsius. At what temperature will the gas occupy a volume of 125 mL, the pressure remaining constant?

Answer #1

According to Charles' law,for a fixed of gas at a constant pressure,the volume (V) of the gas is directly proportional to its absolute(Kelvin) temperature(T).

So we can write V/T =constant when pressure is fixed

Or. V1/T1 = V2/T2

V1T2 = V2T1

T2 = (V2T1) / V1

Given:V1 = 125 mL, T1 = 100oC=273+100=373K , V2 = 125 mL, T2=?

T2 =( V2T1) / V1 =(125 mL * 373 K) / 250 mL

                         = 186.5 K

T2= 186.5 K
