Advertising signs can be illuminated by running an electrical current through a sealed gas tube. This type of sign is typically referred to as a neon sign but why is this name often incorrect?
Also can you find me the source you got the answer from thank you!
"Neon" is used to to denote general type of lamp. Neon is only one of the tube gases that are used commercial.
Pure Neon is used for producibg a third of the color. Remaining majority of colors are produced by filling the tubes with other inert gases , argon and a drop of mercury which is added immediately after purification.
I have given the info as per my knowledge.
If you are looking for a source.. I would suggest wikipedia on neon lighting.
