Question

what are the ways to reduce the HOMO-LUMO gap of a molecule?

what are the ways to reduce the HOMO-LUMO gap of a molecule?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

HOMO-Highest energy Occupied Molecular orbital.

LOMO-Lowest energy Occupied Molecular Orbital.

This indicate distance between 2 orbital of higher and lower molecular orbital.

As distance increase KE and unstability increase as distance increases. The gap is measured by difference between potential of orbital gap.

Following are the ways to decrease homo lumo gap of molecule:-

1)By increasing conjugate length Homo lumo gap of molecule can be decreased

2)By smaller decrease in transmission medium.

In a vacuum gap space, there is no neutral gas molecule in the gap. If an electrode system consists of anode and cathode is applied with high voltage, do you think the breakdown in a vacuum is possible? Justify your answer with concrete arguments and therefore explain two possible mechanisms that can cause a breakdown in a vacuum.
