Water molecule is a polar molecule in nature and the properties of water such as adhesion and cohesion helps in the upward movement of water against the pull of gravity to their leaves. Cohesion stands for the force of attraction between molecules of the same substance whereas adhesion stands for the force of attraction between the molecules of different substances.

The transportation of water in plant against pull of gravity to their leaves is given by Cohesion tension theory. This states that due to cohesion the water molecules stick to the Xylem while travelling upwards. So with the help of cohesion and adhesion the water molecules move upwards against the pull of gravity.
