What is the difference between zeolites and metal organic framework (MOFs)?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Zeolites are aluminosilicates. They are used as a catalyst. They becomes porous i.e the cavities in the cage like str which were occupied by the water molecules become vacant. Only those molecules can be absorbed in these pores whose size is small enough to enter these cavities & also leave easily. Imp zeolite catalyst used in the petroleum industry is ZSM- 5.

MOFs are compounds consisting of metal ions coordinated to organic ligands to form 3 dimensial str. They are often porous. Pores are stable during elimination of the guest molecules & could be refilled with other compounds. They are applicable in gas purification.
