The Depolymerization of PLA is very slow in acidic solution. Poly (lactic acid) consist of aliphatic ester linkages, which was prone to both chemical and enzymatic hydrolysis. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a hydrolytically degradable aliphatic polyester. The basic technique is to depolymerize a lactic acid oligomer at high temperature in presence of certain catalysts (acid or base).

Under acidic conditions liberation of free acetic acid further enhances autocatalysis, but lowers the pH. This increases acidity.

Basic hydrolysis will not give any side products that harm the environment, hence basic hydrolysis is greener method (Green Chemistry).
