Which method of ionization would you suggest for each of the following analytes? Explain your reasoning.

a) Dioxin

b) Horseradish peroxidase

c) Steel shavings

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a) Dioxins are volatile and hence Electron Impact ionization (EI) method or Chemical Impact (CI)
can be used to analyze the analyte where fragmentation is more.
b) Horseradish peroxidase is an enzyme present in horseradish which is used to make wasabi.
Electronspray Ionization (ESI) is used where no fragmentation takes place.
c) Steel shavings contain metals like iron, nickel, manganese etc in different proportions.
Many elements analysis can be done by using Inductively coupled plasma (ICP) method.
