a.) What must be done to drive an unfavorable reaction left to right such as A --> B.

b.) What must be done from A to produce B?

c.) How can you tell whether a reaction is favorable or not?

d.) Can an enzyme make a reaction more favorable?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

(a)

A B

is an unfavorable reaction.
So, the activation is very high. So, the achieve the activation energy add heat by increasing the temperature or add a catalyst which lowers the activation energy.

(b)

Either perform the reaction at an elevated temperature or add a catalyst during the reaction to produce B.

(c)

If the calculated G value is negative, the reaction is favourable and if G value is positive, the reaction is unfavourable. In most of the cases, exothermic reactions (heat evolved) are favourable and endothermic reactions (heat required) are unfavourable.

(d)

Enzymes acts as a catalyst, and a catalyst lowers the activatation energy of a reaction to form the product. Hence, enzyme make a reaction more favorable.
