Lab: synthesis reaction of anthranilic acid and acetic
anhydride, which produces N-acetylanthranilic acid. fluorescence
showed the crystals to be all green/yellow, what does the color
tell you?
how can you tell you seperated every thing in this lab? is there
only one product formed with this reaction or two?
Above one is the reaction through which N-acetylanthranilic acid formed from anthranilic acid and acetic anhydride. In this reaction an intermediate benzisoxazinone was formed which cannot be isolated, it will immediately hydrolyzed to form the N-acetylanthranilic acid crystal. The green/yellow colour you observed in fluorescence is due to the phenomenon of triboluminesence. Triboluminesence is an optical phenomenon in which light is generated due to breaking of chemical bonds. The bond breaking during hydrolyzation of the intermediate will give the color.
