The xanthoproteic test is the one that is used to detect the presence of protein in a solution or substance using concentrated HNO3 (nitric acid).

While performing any other tests using HNO3 , if the acid spills on our hands or nails , they tend to get yellow discoloration , this colour is basically due to the formation of xanthoproteic acid on our skin , as the protein in it reacted with the acid.
