The xanthoproteic test is the one that is used to detect the presence of protein in a solution or substance using concentrated HNO3 (nitric acid).

Knowingly or unknowingly many of us have performed this test on ourselves during chemistry laboratory practicals.

While performing any other tests using HNO3 , if the acid spills on our hands or nails , they tend to get yellow discoloration , this colour is basically due to the formation of xanthoproteic acid on our skin , as the protein in it reacted with the acid.
