Predict the products of the following molecules (cyclohexane, cyclohexane, toluene) using the following regents Br2, H2SO4, HNO3, and KMnO4. (NR indicated no reaction)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

NOTE: I will assume you ment: cyclohexane, cyclohexene and toluene

cyclohexane + Br2 --> 1-bromocyclohexane

cyclohexane + H2SO4 --> no raction

cyclohexane + HNO3 --> no reaction

cyclohexane + KMnO4 --> no reaction

for:

cyclohexene + Br2 --> 1,2-dibromocyclohexane

cyclohexene + H2SO4 --> cyclohexene + OSO2OH

cyclohexene + HNO3 --> no reaction

cyclohexene + KMnO4 --> cyclohexanediol (2 OH groups attach to cycle)

for toluene

toluene+ Br2 --> 1-bromotoluene (meta and para postion)

toluene+ H2SO4 --> toleuene + SO2OH branch (para position)

toluene+ HNO3 --> nitrotoluene (meta/para)

toluene+ KMnO4 --> oxidation, this will become benzoic acid

Complete the following exercise in your lab notebook before coming to lab.    Predict the % cyclohexane in each fraction by sketching a bar graph with the % cyclohexane ( 0- 100 % is the scale) on the y-axis and F1 –F4 on the x-axis.   Your prediction is only an estimate so there is not necessarily a right or wrong answer.
