A) Calcuate the value of delta G(degree) for the reaction below.

Fe (s) + Co^2+ (aq) ---> Co (s) + Fe^2+ (aq)

B) Is the reaction spontaneous as written?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

from data table:

Eo(Fe2+/Fe(s)) = -0.44 V

Eo(Co2+/Co(s)) = -0.28 V

As per given reaction/cell notation,

cathode is (Co2+/Co(s))

anode is (Fe2+/Fe(s))

Eocell = Eocathode - Eoanode

= (-0.28) - (-0.44)

= 0.16 V

number of electrons being transferred, n = 2

F = 96500.0 C

we have below equation to be used:

deltaGo = -n*F*Eo

= -2*96500.0*0.16

= -30880 J/mol

= -30.9 J/mol

Answer: = -30.9 J/mol

B)

Since deltaGo is negative, reaction is sponteneous
