How many liters of gas will be in the closed reaction flask when 36.0L of ethane (C2H6) is allowed to react with 105.0L of oxygen (under constant pressure and temperature) to form carbon dioxide gas and water vapor? Assume ideal gas behavior. The balanced equation for the reaction is

2C2H6(g)+7O2(g)⟶4CO2(g)+6H2O(g)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Balanced chemical equation is:

2 C2H6 + 7 O2 ---> 4 CO2 + 6 H2O

2 L of C2H6 reacts with 7 ; of O2

for 36 ; of C2H6, 126 L of O2 is required

But we have 105 L of O2

so, O2 is limiting reagent

we will use O2 in further calculation

According to balanced equation

volume of CO2 formed = (4/7)* volume of O2

= (4/7)*105

= 90 L

volume of H2O formed = (6/7)* volume of O2

= (7/7)*105

= 60 L

volume of C2H6 remaining = volume initially present - volume reacted

= 36 - 30

= 6 L

total volume of gas = volume of CO2 formed + volume of H2O formed + volume of C2H6 remaining

= 90 L + 60 L + 6 L

= 156 L

Answer: 156 L
