0. 125 L sample of chlorine gas at 25 °C, is heated to a volume of 175 mL If the pressure remains constant, what is the final Celsius temperature?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

V1 = .125 L = 125 ml

V2 = 175 ml

T1 = 25°C = 25 + 273 K =298 K

T2 = ?

Note : For these type of problems, always convert temperature in degree Celsius to Kelvin and do the problem even if the final answer is asked in degree Celsius. Obtain the final answer in Kelvin and convert it back to degree Celsius.

By Charles law, at constant pressure,

V/T = constant

i.e., V1/T1 = V2/T2

   125/298 = 175/ T2

   T2 = (175 x 298) / 125

= 417.2 K

   = (417.2 - 273)°C

   = 144.2 ° C

Thus final temperature is 144.2°C
