What other types of analytical methods can be used to determine the composition of a two-phase liquid system? Discuss approaches that can be used (a) without removing samples, and (b) by withdrawing small aliquots.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

(a) without removing samples

As the system is not homogeneous, this prevents optimal analysis. If the sample contains metal ions, qualitative methods of analysis using complexation and precipitation could be used. However, the best option is to take aliquotes from each phase for an individual analysis.

(b) by withdrawing small aliquots

Having aliquots of each phase, typical methods such as: chromatography, UV and IR spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectroscopy, etc. can be used.

This will depend on the type of sample you have, whether it contains organic or inorganic molecules and the amount of sample.

You are using two different analytical methods to do elemental analysis (analyzing the elemental composition) of a sample. When using combustion analysis coupled with gas chromatography and thermal conductivity detection (Method 1), you find that the sample has 64.42 %C, 6.39 %H, and 3.15 %N (w/w). When using combustion analysis coupled with infrared spectroscopy (Method 2), you find that the sample has 64.97 %C, 6.00 %H, and 3.33 %N (w/w). [What type of t test should you use to compare...

What is the difference between body composition reference methods and anthropometric field methods? Both methods capture the same data Anthropometric field methods can be used as the gold standard for true body composition while reference methods are compared to that gold standard Reference methods are biologically-based, objective measures while field measures are mostly based on self-reported data collected in the field Anthropometric measures are typically more expensive than reference methods All of the following are advantages of CT and MRI...

Your boss asked you to evaluate a new analytical method for the determination of creatinine in blood samples. To complete the assignment, you proceed to determine a standard 58.1 nmol/L solution of creatinine by applying the established method used in the lab (A) and the new method (B) suggested by your boss. Repeated determinations obtained from 100.0 L aliquots of standard solution gave the following results: a) Which method incurs in the smaller absolute deviation from the known content of...

There are two main methods to get proteins into a gas phase for mass spectroscopy: electrospray ionization (ESI) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI). Place the appropriate description of each ionization method in the appropriate space. - Can be used for proteins or peptides that have been treated with proteases like trypsin - Ionization evaporates solvent, leaving peptide in gas phase to travel through the separating mass spectrometer. - Uses mass-to-charge (m/z) ratio to determine molecular mass - Degrades and charges...
