Describe how the desensitization of a receptor differs with acute exposure compared to chronic exposure regarding the number/location of receptors present and reversibility of the desensitization (no more than 8 sentences)
(Pharmacology - Topic: Receptor Regulation, Tolerance and Dependence)
Answer-
Desensitization of receptor means when receptor decrease and stop the response to agonist binding.
When agonist bonds with the receptor for a long time by repeated dosing. The receptor decreases the intrinsic activity of an agonist it is called chronic desensitization.
Where acute desensitization leads due to a single high dose. A single high dose of agonist also leads desensitization.
These all process follow the mechanism of tachyphylaxis and tolerance.
