Predict whether the entropy change of the system is positive of negative: for NH4Cl(s) --> NH3(g) + HCl(g)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Entropy change of system is shown by symbol S. When entropy increases S is positive, and when entropy decreases S is negative.

Balanced chemical equation can often be used to predict if

S is positive or negative.

There will be significant increase in entropy change of system if there is

- a change of state from solid or liquid to gas.

- increase in number of moles of substance between products and reactants.

NH4Cl(s) NH3(g)+HCl(g)

Here S = positive ( i.e change from solid reactant to gaseous product; increase in number of molecules , both will increase disorder)
