- Solve the following arithmetic problem and give the answer with the correct number of sig figs.

(6.93-2.0)/4.100 + (1.90 X 2.0)/ 1.26

Which Significant figures rule do you apply? the multiplication/division, or the adding/ subtracting?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

(6.93-2.0)/4.100 + (1.90 X 2.0)/ 1.26

applying adding/ subtracting rule:

6.93 - 2.0 = 4.9

applying multiplication/division rule:

1.90 X 2.0 = 3.8

Above expression becomes,

(6.93-2.0)/4.100 + (1.90 X 2.0)/ 1.26

= (4.9)/4.100 + (3.8)/ 1.26

applying multiplication/division rule:

(4.9)/4.100 = 1.2

applying multiplication/division rule:

(3.8)/ 1.26 = 3.0

The expression now becomes,

(4.9)/4.100 + (3.8)/ 1.26

= 1.2 + 3.0

= 4.2 (applying adding/ subtracting rule)

Answer: 4.2
