1.02 if acetylsalicylic acid was obtained from 1.00g of salicylic acid by reaction with excess acetic anhydride. Calculate the percent yield of acetylsalicylic acid.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

C7H6O3 + C4H6O3 ----------> C9H8O4 + C2H4O2

1 mole of salicylic acid react with acetic hydride to gives 1 mole of acetylsalicylic acid

138g of salicylic acid react with acetic hydride to gives 180g of acetylsalicylic acid

1g of salicylic acid react with acetic hydride to gives 180*1/138     = 1.3g of acetylsalicylic acid

percentage yield   = actual yield*100/theoritical yield

                               = 1.02*100/1.3   = 78.5% >>>>answer

Aspirin can be made in the laboratory by reacting acetic anhydride (C4H6O3) with salicylic acid (C7H6O3) to form aspirin (C9H8O4) and acetic acid (C2H4O2). The balanced equation is C4H6O3+C7H6O3→C9H8O4+C2H4O2 In a laboratory synthesis, a student begins with 2.80 mL of acetic anhydride (density=1.08g/ml) and 1.24 g of salicylic acid.
