Someone tells you that the spice tumeric is a natural pH indicator. How might you test this claim, using only substances that you are likely to have available at home?

Answer #1

yes, turmeric acts as a natural pH indicator. It remains yellow ( which is its original colour) in acidic or neutral substances and turns red with bases.

we can test this in home by the following way:-

  • basic substance check: For this we can use soap solution or baking soda whichever is available and make its solution in pure water, Add turmeric to it and we can observe that the colour will change from yellow to red. This colour change confirms that the soap/baking soda solution is basic.
  • acidic substance check: For this we can use lemon or vinegar whichever is available and make its solution in pure water, Add turmeric to it and we would observe that the colour of the solution remains yellow(does not changes to red) . This confirms the solution is acidic.

Hope this is helpful, please rate if this solution is helpful, thank you.
