Mixing furan with maleic anhydride in ether yields a crystalline solid with a melting point of 125
Furan and Maleic anhydride undergoes a Diels-Alder reaction when mixed together to form an adduct as shown below in th figure. This compounds melts when heated at 125 oC. At its melting point it undergoes a retro-Diels-Alder reaction, wherein, furan leaves as a gas from the system. When cooled it resolidifies to give back maleic anhydride melting at 56 oC.
