. A bag of ice containing 325 g of ice at 0 0C was placed on a patient’s sore thigh muscles. When the ice bag was removed, all the ice had melted, and the liquid water in the bag had a temperature of 18 0C.

(a) What was the final volume of liquid water in the ice bag?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer.

Given that,

mass of ice (m) = 325 g

density of ice (at 0 oC) (d) = 0.971 g/mL

Since in the above process, the ice at 0 C completely melts to liquid water at same temperature (phase change), volume of ice = mass/density = 325/0.971 = 334.71 mL.

On freezing, volume of water increases by 9.05 %.

Let initial volume of water be x.

Upon freezing, it will be = x+(0.0905x) = 1.0905 x which is volume of ice.

Therefore,

1.0905*x = 334.71

x = 306.9326 mL

Therefore,

Final volume of water will be 306.9326 mL.
