why fentanyl( drug) turns to orange colour when reacting with marquis reagent?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Fentanyl is an opoid used as a pain medication. Its also used as a recreational drug, often mixed with heroin or cocain. Marquis reagent is a simple spot test used to identify compounds like alkaloids. It is composed of a mixture of formaldehyde and conc.sulfuric acid. During the test different compounds produce different colors. When fentanyl drug reacts with marquis reagent, its color turns to orange. This is because of the result of condensation between fentanyl drug and formaldehyde of reagent to give a dimeric product. Because of that fentanyl turs to orange.
