a. For Potassium carbonate (solid) plus aqueous fumaric acid (H2C4H2O4) , what is the base and what gas is produced from it? _____________ _____________

b. For Aqueous sodium phosphate plus aqueous barium nitrate, what are the spectator ions? _____________ _____________

c. For Pyruvic acid (HC3H3O3) undergoing complete combustion, what type of acid is pyruvic acid? _____________ _____________

d. For Zinc (solid) reacting with aqueous hydrochloric acid forming aqueous zinc(II) chloride and ????, what is the oxidizing agent and what gas is produced? _____________ _____________

Homework Answers

Answer #1

(a) K2CO3(aq) + H2C4H2O4(aq) ---------> K2C4H2O4(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l)

Base is K2CO3

Gas produced is carbon dioxide(CO2).

(b) 2Na3PO4(aq) + 3Ba(NO3)2(aq) ---------> Ba3(PO4)2(s) + 6NaNO3(aq)

Net ionic : 3Ba^2+(aq) + 2PO4^3-(aq) -------> Ba3(PO4)2(s)

spectator ions : Na+(aq) , NO3- (aq)

(c) 2HC3H3O3 + 5O2 ------------> 6CO2 + 4H2O

(d) Zn(s) + HCl(aq) ---------> ZnCl2(aq) + H2(g)

Zn is oxidised to Zn2+ and H+ is reduced to H2.

So, HCl is oxidising agent.

Zn is reducing agent.
