5 choose the best classification of the reaction represented by the following equation
MgO (g) +CO2(g) - MgCO3(s)
A. single replacement
B. double replacement
C. combination
D. decomposition
E. precipitation

Homework Answers

Answer #1

First of all, MgO is solid, so the reaction should be,

MgO(s) + CO2 (g) MgCO3 (s)

Now when as in the above reaction there is no replacement of substance by another substance it is neither a single or double replacement.

Since two components are combining it is not a decomposition reaction.

Since there is no aqueous solution involves it is not a precipitation reaction.

But here two components are combining to form a single component MgCO3 .

Hence it is a C. Combination reaction
