Nickel forms a gaseous compound Ni(CO)x. Under the same temperature and pressure, CH4 effuses through a small opening in 11.5 minutes, while Ni(CO)x effuses in 37.9 minutes. What is the value of x?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

RATE OF EFFUSION = SQUARE ROOT OF M1/M2= R1/R2

WHERE M1= MASS OF NI(CO)x= 58.7 +x*28.7

M2= MASS OF CH4=16

R1= RATE OF EFFUSION OF NI(CO)x=37.9 minutes

R2 = RATE OF EFFUSION OF CH4 = 11.5 minutes

PUT THE VALUE IN THE FORMULA, AFTER SQUARING BOTH SIDES THE FORMULA BECOMES M1/M2=(R1*R1)/(R2*R2)

(58.7+x*28)/16 = 37.9*37.9/11.5*11.5

58.7 + x*28 = 10.8613 * 16

58.7 + x*28 = 173.7808

x*28 = 173.7808-58.7

x*28=115.0808

x= 115.0808/28

x=4.11

it is nearly equal to

so our formula is NI(CO)4
