Write balanced reaction equations for the formation of bromine and iodide from their corresponding halide salts. (KBr, KI) For each equation, assign oxidation numbers to each atom and identify the oxidizing and reducing agents.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

On passing Fluorine or chlorine gas through the solution of KBr or KI salts, bromine and Iodine are produced respectively.

F2 (g) + 2 KBr (aq.) -----------------> Br2 (l) + 2 KF (aq.)

O.S: F2 = 0, Br- = -1                    Br2 = 0, F- = -1

F2 is oxidisng agent and KBr is reducing agent

F2 (g) + 2 KI (aq.) ----------------> I2 (s) + 2 KF (aq.)

O.S: F2 = 0, I- = -1 I2 = 0, F- = -1

F2 = oxidising agent and KI = reducing agent,
