For an experimental study of the kinetics of hydrogen peroxide decomposition in which the pressure of oxygen or volume of oxygen is monitored as a function of time, what should the volume of oxygen collected or the pressure of oxygen be at time zero? Do you expect your plot to pass through the origin? If so, why? If not, why not?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans. Balanced Reaction:       2H2O2(l) --------> 2H2O(l) + O2(g)

# At time t=0, there is no decomposition of H2O2. So, there is NO O2 at initial time t=0.

The volume of O2 evolve gradually increases as H2O2 decomposes.

# When graph is plotted by placing volume of O2 on Y-axis and time (seconds) on X-axis, the line originates from zero indicating that there is no (or, zero volume of O2 evolved) O2 is there is the reaction vessel at time t=0.

# Therefore, the plot is expected to pass through the origin.

Hydrogen peroxide decomposes to yield water and oxygen. The decomposition is first order with a rate constant at 46°C of 1.6 × 10-4 s-1. Calculate the partial pressure of the oxygen produced from 1.25 L of a 0.750 M H2O2 solution at 46°C over a period of 24.0 hours if the gas is collected in a 13.0 L container. Please show all work! About This Lab In this lab, you will examine the effects of temperature, pH, and substrate concentration on the enzyme, catalase. Catalase greatly accelerates the decomposition of dangerously reactive hydrogen peroxide into harmless water, oxygen, and heat as shown in the equation below. Because oxygen gas is created as a product, the rate of the reaction is easy to evaluate by looking at how many and how quickly gas bubbles are produced. Most living cells contain catalase because many cellular...

The unsaturated C4H6 dimerizes to C8H12. When data in the study of kinetics is collected and plotted against time, the plots of [C4H6] or ln[C4H6] produced curved lines whereas the plot of 1/[C4H6] was linear. a. Calculate the concentration of C4H6 left after 33 minutes. The rate constant is 6.721 x 10-2 M-1 s -1 and the half-life is 128 seconds. b. What is the rate law for this reaction? When answering it'd be greatly appreciated if you could show...

Case Study – Acute Renal Failure She was found behind an overturned table after the bomb blast destroyed the sidewalk coffee shop. She had several large wounds and had lost quite a bit of blood. She was also burned over about 10% of her body surface. At the scene, rescuers stopped the major blood loss and evacuated her, but they were not able to rouse her and it was several hours until she could be delivered to the hospital. Her...
