Found in fats, glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids and serving as as membrane anchors for proteins and other biomolecules, fatty acids are important for energy storage, membrane structure, and as precursors of most classes of lipids.
Glycerophospholipids. Glycerophospholipids are major constituents of membranes and are responsible for the membrane being a bilayer. These are more complex structures consisting of a molecule of glycerol to which are attached two fatty acids, a phosphate, and usually one other small molecule (X).
