In your own words describe the principles behind gas chromatography. Your narrative should include the terms stationary phase, inert gas, mobile phase, and vapor pressure.
Can you please type your answer, Thank You.
The Principle of Gas Chromatography (or gas liquid chromatography) - it depeneds on the partition coefficient of various components in gaseous state. It can be used for volatile material only, preferably below 300oC. Salts and ions can not be used.
An inert gas Helium or unreactive nitrgen are used as the carrier gas which is the mobile phase here.
A microscopic material or a polymer liquid bound to the wall of the column acts as a stationary phase.
The sample vapour interacts with this stationary phase and elute at different times according its retention time, lower boilling elutes first.
There are two types of cilumns used in GC, packed column and Cappilary column.
There are many types of detectors used for detection like FID, TCD, ECD etc.
