Answer to 19QP of Chapter20 of Principles of Instrumental Analysis(6thEd)

(a) The method of ionisation best suited for biologically importanbt compound is-Electron Ionisation because it can give clear fragments which can be analysed for the molecular mass of compound.

Secondly, EI method can ionize compound of1000Da so biomolecules are large in size & structure can be easily analysed by this technique.

(b)For analysis of molecular structure Chemical Ionisation can be used as it can easily give inference about volatile compunds also.

(c) Find time of flight, Given is: m/z=58; L=1m; V=3000V

Time=Distance/velocity

eV=mv2/2

1x3000=58xv2/2

v=10.17

time=dist/velocity

time=1/10.17=.09832sec
