In the lab of Acidic Dichromate Oxidation of Alcohols: What would be required if you were asked to isolate the oxidation products
The oxidation of alcohols with acidic dichromate forms carboxylic acid or ketones
R-CH2-OH + Cr2O7^2- + H2O -----> R-COOH + Cr^3+ + SO4^2- + H2O
RCH(OH)-R + Cr2O7^2- + H2O -----> R-CO-R + Cr^3+ + SO4^2- + H2O
The prodcuts are carboxylic acids/ketone and Chromium sulfate
Carboxylic acid and ketone are organic in nature hence soluble in organic solvents like Ether, dichloromethane, chloroform etc while the prodcuts of dichromate are readily soluble in water. Thus the oxidized prodcuts can be separated using solvent extraction with an organic-aqueous mixture
