Describe the chemistry of the 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate molecule. what is the net charge on the molecule?
chemistry of the 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate
2,3-bisphosphoglycerate is a three carbon isomer of the glycolytic intermediate 2,3-bisphosphoglyceric acid.
It is mainly found in human red blood cells at about 5mmol/L. It has greater affinity towards deoxygenated haemoglobin. It interacts with beta sheets of haemoglobin and decreases the affinity of oxygen and it allosterically promotes the release of oxygen at lungs.
it contain one sterocenter and it gives a phopshate unit to ADP to form ATP in the presence of phosphoglycerate kinase to form 3-phopshoglycerate
The net charge on 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate is 4-
