A material is made up of a mixture of large grains and very small grains. Describe what happens when the material is heated at 90% of its’ melting point for a long time? (Note: Do not answer what happens to the melting point but what happens to the grains)
The Sintering temperature is typically around 70% of melting temperature or point of a material. The Following happens when sintering occurs.
But, if the material is heated to 90% of its melting point which is much higher than sintering temperature for longer time, the smaller grains are joined to the bigger grain to form a much bigger grain, and this is called Oswald Ripening.
