Propose an Extraction Flowchart capable of separating the mixture (compounds in the box) into their pure forms (individual compounds). In each step, include all necessary reagents (organic solvents, aqueous solutions, drying agents) and manipulations (shaking/mixing, separating phases, filtering/decanting) in their proper order. Clearly indicate the structures of the compounds at each step in the process.

Could you show me how to complete this using CH2Cl2 as the organic solvent? Thank you!

Answer #1

For example glucose(G) and vanillin (V) as a mixture, to separate this mixture by extraction using Dichloro methane (DCM) as a solvent.

Step 1 -In 100 mL beaker take 1 gm. of mixture of G and V and add 25mL DCM and 50 mL water and stir.

Step 2 Take this mixture in 100 ml separating funnel.

Step 3-Shake well and keep on stand to settle the layers. Bottom layer will be DCM (organic layer contains vanillin) and on its above will be aqueous layer contains Glucose.

Step 4- separate the organic layer in 100ml conical flask and dry over sodium sulfate and transfer in 100 ml RB Flask evaporates to get pure vanillin.

So organic layer contains vanillin and aqueous layer contains glucose, there structures as follows.

Vanilline and Glucose
