Though on book it appears simple that diamond is just an allotrope of Carbon with atoms of carbon arranged in a particular fashion and creating suitable conditions we can convert other allotropes of carbon to diamond. But in reality the process would require very high temperature and pressure conditions and the process is very complicated rendering the whole excercise economically unviable and technology has yet not matured to a stage so as to make them better option than the naturally occuring diamonds. That's why we can't afford to do mass production of diamonds synthetically.
