Indentify the type of force in each and arrange them in order of decreasing boiling point.

CH3NH2
CH3OCH3
NaCl

Homework Answers

Answer #1

CH3NH2 is pyramidal at N, so it is polar and will exhibit dipole‐dipole interactions. It also exhibits hydrogen bonding, because it has N‐H bonds and an N lone pair. It also has Dispersion Forces. Hydrogen bonding will be the most significant interaction.

CH3OCH3 is a polar molecule thus it also has dipole-dipole force

NaCl - It has Coulambic or ionic force.

Order of decreasing boiling point

The relative strength of the intermolecular forces is: Ionic > Hydrogen bonding > dipole dipole, thus

NaCl > CH3NH2 > CH3OCH3
