Why are EI and CI techniques used in GC/MS and APCI or ESI techniques used in LC/MS? What is the difference and why are they not interchangeable?

Answer #1

By oleoresin extracted of using hexane in LC/MS for conforming lutein esters.

Running a parallel sample is saponified(i.e, with esters removed) which is intended to contain pure lutein.

Difference between ESI and APCI is,ESI is a source of ionization process that occur in mobile phase with addition of acid or basic compounds.

APCI is a source of ionization process that occur in a corona needle, this is performed for a electrical discharge in needle.

APCI is used to ionozation non polar molecules.

ESI is used in polar molecules or polar compounds.

If sodium methoxide in methanol was used in place of potassium t-butoxide in t-butanol, your GC analysis would look much more like the 2-butanol/sulfuric acid reaction products. In addition, a new, non-alkene product would be present in the GC analysis. Explain why the alkene distribution would change, what the new product would be, and why this new product would form.
