What are the required characteristic features of diene and dienophile that is favorable for a Diels-Alder reaction?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Diene have two double bond that is four pi electrons. Dienes are electron dense. With increasing the + R or + I group in diene, the reaction rate increases.

Dienophile have minimum one double bond that is two pi electrons. With increasing the -I or -R group in dienophile the reaction rate increases.

Diene and dienophile react in six membered cyclic transition state.

Diels-Alder reaction is

Diene + dienophile + heat .................> Diels-Alder cyclic product.

The Diels-Alder reaction is one of the most useful in organic chemistry because it allows for the formation of rings: The reactor initially has only the diene and the dienophile. The purpose of this experiment is to form 9,10-dihydroanthracene-9,10-α,β-succinic anhydride by way of a Diels Alder reaction between anthracene and maleic anhydride, as shown in the reaction below. Anthracene acts as the diene and maleic anhydride functions as the dienophile. Xylene (dimethylbenzene) is used as a high boiling temperature solvent so that the reaction will proceed quickly. Give 5 observations that occurred for a Diels-Alder reaction between maleic anhydride, anthracene, and xylene and why those observations occurred (yes it is...
