if 5.0g of CO2 and 5.0g of Ar are placed in a 750 mL container at 500C ,what will be the partial pressure of CO2 (in atm) in the mixture?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

no of mol of CO2 = 5/44 = 0.1136 mol

no of mol of Ar = 5/36 = 0.139 mol

total no of mol of mixture = 0.1136+0.139 = 0.2526 mol

total pressure(pTotal) = nRT/V = 0.2526*0.0821*(500+273.15)/0.75

                        = 21.38 atm

molefraction of CO2 = 0.1136/0.2526 = 0.45

partial pressure of CO2(pCO2) = xCO2*pTotal

         = 0.45*21.38

         = 9.621 atm
