For each of the follow pairs of immiscible solvents, indicate which would be on top and which would be on the bottom, in a separating funnel: a) ether/water, b) dichloromethane/water, c) 10% NaOH/ hexane.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a) ether/water

top - ether

bottom - water

Because ether have density 0.706 gm/ml and water have density 1.0 gm/ml therefore water is at bottom and ether is at top in seprating funnel

solvent which have high density it is at bottom and solvent which have low density it is at top.

a) dichloromethane/water

top - water

bottom - dichloromethane

Because dichloromethane have density 1.325 gm/ml and water have density 1.0 gm/ml therefore dichloromethane is at bottom and water is at top in seprating funnel

solvent which have high density it is at bottom and solvent which have low density it is at top.

a) 10% NaOH/Hexane

top - Hexane

bottom - 10 % NaOH

Because 10 % NaOH have density 1.11 gm/ml and Hexane have density 0.659 gm/ml therefore 10 % NaOH is at bottom and Hexane is at top in seprating funnel

solvent which have high density it is at bottom and solvent which have low density it is at top.

The substances given are 50% benzoic acid, 40% benzoin, and 10%1,4-dibromobenzene. I need a seperation scheme, i know i have to use extraction and recrytallization to seperate each. I am just confused which substances to use, the solvents available are water, 1.0M NaOH, 6.0m NaOH, 1.0M HCl, 6.0M HCl, 1M NaHCO3, saturated aq sodium chloride, dichloromethane, diethyl ether, 95% ethanol, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, hexane, and toluene. thank you for any help!
