Devise a procedure for distinguishing between MgBr2 and MgI2

a. What reagent can be used to distinguish between MgBr2 and MgI2

b. Describe the different observations associated with MgBr2 and MgI2 after adding the reagent

c. Write the chemical equations of the reagent with each MgBr2 and MgI2

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a) MgBr2 and MgI2 upon dissolving in water give the solution of Br- and I- respectively.

So to distinguish we need reagent which can give react with these ions separately and give different reactions.

Procedure:

Take 1 mL test solution and add 1mL AgNO3 solution to it. Observe the ppt color and separate the ppt using the centrifuge/decantation method. Take some ppt and add conc. NH3 solution and observe the ppt, if it gets dissolved or not.

b) Br- upon reaction with AgNO3 gives the cream ppt and this ppt gets dissolved in conc. NH3 solution.

However, I- also gives yellow ppt with AgNO3 but the ppt does not get dissolved in conc. NH3 solution.

c)

MgBr2 + 2AgNO3 ------> 2AgBr(s) + Mg2+(aq) + 2NO3-(aq)

AgBr(s) + 2 NH3(aq) → [Ag(NH3)2]+(aq) + Br:-(aq)

and

MgI2 + 2AgNO3 ------> 2AgI(s) + Mg2+(aq) + 2NO3-(aq)

AgI(s) + 2 NH3(aq) → No reaction!

You have synthesized a redox reagent that is a complex between cobalt and six ammonia molecules ([Co(NH3)6] 3+/2+). It cycles between the Co(II) and Co(III) oxidation states. Unfortunately, after you complete your synthesis, you learn that your potentiostat is broken and you have no way to measure the reduction potential of your compound. Fortunately, you realize that you have sufficient information from other experiments and from data tables to determine the potential for this reagent. This information is: The standard...
