Two corn oil samples from different varieties in different parts of the country were analyzed using TLC. Would you expect the TLC data to be the same or different? Explain.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Two corn oils are of different varieties that is their compositions are different. So, the Retention Factor ( Rf ) value will be different for this two types of oils. Rf value quantifies the distance that each component of the analyzed mixture has traveled. If different oils are used, the relative positions of the bands would be different. Therefore, TLC data will be different but the difference is slight.

NOTE: Rf = Distance travelled by the compound/ Distance travelled by thew solvent

When ACE, ASP and CAF were analyzed by TLC using 2:9:9 mixture of t-butyl alcohol, 4-methyl-2-pentanone and ethyl acetate respectively the following Rf values were obtained: ACE (0.51), ASP (0.15) and CAF (0.35). These results are not the same ones obtained when using 2% acetic acid and 98% ethyl acetate as the mobile phase? Explain why were the results different for our case (TLC shown) particularly for caffeine. I know that the 2%/98% mobile phase is mostly nonpolar, so asprin...

Choose a quantitative variable. Measure it on two different samples of 10, drawn from two different populations. For example, you might measure the number of cups of chocolate consumed daily by men vs women. Provide a description of the data selected, and the two different populations you chose. Record the data, and for EACH sample, find the mean and standard deviation and the five-number summary. Compare your two samples using boxplots or histograms. Summarize your results in a paragraph, including...

Using R, generate 10 different samples of size 20 from a standard normal distribution and generate qq plots for each sample. Include two qq plots for your answer; one that shows the sample that is most and one that shows the sample that is least similar to what we would expect from a normal population. Make sure to label which is which and explain what characteristics of the graphs you used to choose which was which.

There were two separate children samples who were taught history in two different way, one is traditional using only blackboard the other one using different methods of teaching history including videos. The first sample has n = 10 with SS = 450 where the second sample has n = 4 and a SS = 230. Calculate the pooled variance for both samples. If the sample mean difference is 6 point, do you have the enough information for rejecting the null...
