If I start out with 50.0 mLs of solution, then take a 25.0 mL aliquout of the solution, and I dilute the 25.0 mL aliquot to 50.0 mLs; how would I use this dilution infromation to determine the concentration of the initial 50.0 mL solution?
For example, the concentration after the aliquot was diluted to 50.0 mLs was 1.9065 x 10-5. What was the concentration of the original 50.0 mL solution?
Use the formula C1V1 = C2V2
Where C1 = initial concentration = ?
V1 = initial volume = 25 ml (volume of aliquot)
C2 = final concentration = 1.9065 10-5 (concentration after silution)
V2 = final concentration = 50 ml (volume after dillution)
Substitute the value in formula
C1V1 = C2V2
C1 = C2V2/V1
= 1.9065 10-5 50 / 25
C1 = 3.813 10-5
original solution concentration is 3.813 10-5
