Question

Is increasing the glass transition temperature will increase or decrease toughness?

Is increasing the glass transition temperature will increase or decrease toughness?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Tansition temperature:

If the glassy material is heated, the chains reach a temperature at which they can move. This temperature is called the glass transition temperature.

Above this temperature the polymer is flexible.Since the physical properties of a polymer are strongly dependent on the size or length of the polymer chain. Long chains get tangled up in each other and stick together far more than short chains. So increasing chain length furthermore tends to decrease chain mobility, increase strength and toughness, and increase the glass transition temperature shorter molecules can pass over each other more easily so materials made of these molecules are softer.

The glass transition temperature of a linear polymer with number average molecular weight MN =2300 was measured at 120°C. This increased to 155°C for the same linear polymer with MN =9000. A branched version of this polymer with MN =7200 was found to have a Tg=105°C. Calculate the average number of branches per molecule in this branched polymer.

I thought of plastic clothes hangers as being used below the glass transition temperatures. Plastic clothes hangers need to be hard and rigid to handle the weight of different types of clothing that hand on them. Plastic hangers are made from polystyrene no. 6 according to my research which has a glass transition temperature under 100 Celsius. Silicone based products such as silicone bracelets or silicone cables are used above their glass transition temperatures. The glass transition temperature range is...
