How many valence e-s Xe has ? i think 8 but how ? if he has 8 valence . so when XeF2 the Xe will have 10 total elctrones and this is against the octect rule even XeF4 the Xe atom has 12 e-s? i do not understand how ?
Xenon is a noble gas and it has a full octet and thus belongs to the zero valence electron group. Xenon has 0 valence electrons as its octet is full.
However in XeF2 and XeF4, Xenon has more than 8 electrons as Xenon does not follow the octet rule and can hold more than 8 valence electrons while bonding. This is possible because d orbitals are involved in the bonding. Atoms which have electrons in their d orbitals can hold upto 18 electrons while bonding, the octet rule is applicable only to electrons in s and p orbitals.
