So here's a few questions off of the study guide for the upcoming test. We were given the answers but I really want to make sure I am doing everything correctly. Any help is appreciated!

1) Consider a neutral Magnesium atom. How many of the following does it have: Core electrons, valance electrons, electrons in first shell, 2nd shell, 3rd shell, 4th shell. What charge does magnesium tend to form and why?

2) For each of the following compounds, predict the type of bond that will be formed and draw it using the electronic dot structures. a) KCl, b) SiH4, c) Al2O3, d) O2

3) Consider KF and C5H12. Which would be more likely to be a) high melting, b) a crystilline solid, c) an amorphous liquid, d) volatile, e) combustable, f) solubile in water, g) solubile in oil.

4) What is the % composition of a) KF, b) K2SO4

5) Calculate the empirical formula of the following; a) 22.1%Al, 25.4% P, and 52.5% O b) 2.20 grams of S and 7.81 grams of F.

Answer #1

1)

1) Consider a neutral Magnesium atom. How many of the following does it have:

a)Core electrons : 12

Number of electron in Mg = 12 because atomic number of Mg is 12 and it is neutral.

b)valance electrons: 2

It has 2 electrons in the valence shell that is 3rd shell

c)

Number of electron in Mg = 12

Electronic configuration is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2

electrons in first shell : 2

d)2nd shell : 2+6 = 8

e)3rd shell : 2

f) 4th shell = 0

g) What charge does magnesium tend to form and why?

It can form +2 charge.

As it has 2 electrons in its valence shell which it can loose
