How would you chemically distinguish between each of the following pairs?
a) Cyclohexene and cyclohexane
b) 1-butyne and 2-butyne
c) cis-2-butene and trans-2-butene
a) cyclo hexene contain double bond or unsaturation. So check for reaction with any saturation, like bromination or add potassium permanganate. The double bonded compound will decolurise Bromine or potassium permanganate, but cyclo hexane will not.
b) 1 butyne contains a terminal triple bond while in 2 butyne, triple bond at 2 nd carbon. So need to distinguish terminal and middle triple bonds. You can go for Tollens reagent, the terminal alkyne will react with Tollens reagent and form white precipitate, but 2-butyne will not give precipitate
c) The boiling point of cis isomer will be higher than the boiling point of trans isomers. Also, in terms of solubility, cis isomer will be more soluble than trans isomer, giving their structures below.
