The total pressure in a 11.7L automobile tire is 44 psi at 11oC. By how much does the pressure in the tire rise if it warms to a temperature of 37oC and the volume remains at 11.7L?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

P = 44 psi = 44 x 0.068046 atm    = 2.994 atm = initial Pressure P1 ( since 1 psi = 0.068046 atm)

T = 11 C = 11+273 = 284 K = initial Temp T1

V = 11.7 L = initial Volume V1

we use PV = nRT   equation

when no gas added or removed   P1V1 / T1 = P2V2/ T2

where T2 = 37C = 37+273 = 310 , V2 = 11.7 L same as V1 , we find P2

( 2.994 atm x 11.7 L) / ( 284 K) = ( P2 x 11.7 L / 310 K)

P2 = 3.268 atm = 3.268 x 14.6959 psi = 48 psi   ( since 1atm = 14.6959 psi)
